Introduction to vedic Astrology
Astrology in India is popularly known as JYOTISH or Vedic Astrology. The word
Jyotish stands for “the science of light.” This science dates back to several
thousand years and is considered to be founded by the spiritual preachers.
Origin Of Vedic Astrology
Commonly known as Rishis or Yogis, these seers dedicated their entire lives to the spiritual practices and meditation. It is their subterranean meditative experiences along with Yoga knowledge that has given birth to Astrology. Not only have this, but all the food for soul including music, mantras, and ayurveda have also originated from Vedic practices of Yoga. Needless to say, Vedic form of Astrology Predications is spiritual in nature. It aims at enabling one understand the concept of personal Karma first. Thereafter, it enables a practitioner to correct his/her Karmas, remains unidentified with them, and eventually helps in the liberation of soul. This is done by breaking free the bondages with the objective to completely dwell in one’s own celestial inner nature, also known as “Atman” or the immortal soul.
The Indian seers were so talented that they used and followed advanced astronomical principles way before the contraption of a telescope. They were aware of the earth and other planets’ orbiting the Sun thousands of years ago. They could calculate the planetary motions precisely and used to announce true Astrology Predications. Their theory considered the planets to be agents easing out the operation of the law of Karma.
Vedic Astrology V/s Vedas
Jyotish is popularly believed to be one of the six limbs of the Vedas, known as "vedangas." It may also connote six sciences that need to be studied prior to fully understanding and practicing Vedic teaching. These six limbs or the angas include –
- Vyakarana that literally stands for face,
- Chandas Meter connotes legs,
- Nirukta signifies ears as well as etymology
- Shiksha refers to pronunciation and denotes nose,
- Kalpa Pujas, refer to hands and denotes ceremonies and,
- Jyotish meaning astrology connotes eyes.
Based on these limbs, Jyotish has been classified into six categories called:
- Gola: This stands for observational astronomy.
- Ganita: This category of astrology deals with mathematical and astronomical calculations
- Jataka: Popularly known as Natal Astrology, this branch helps the practitioners to understand the upshots of Karma during an individual’s birth.
- Muhurta:This category is actually coined as Electional Astrology. It mainly deals with choosing a propitious moment to initiate any important activity
- Prashna: Known as Horary astrology, this branch is very time and question specific. This actually implores answering a specific question on the basis of planetary motions at the time of query.
- Nimitha: This entirely works upon an interpretation of omens.
People, who want to understand Indian Jyotish, must understand the theory of Karma first.
What Does Karma Imply?
Karma stands for the universal commandment of action-reaction, and cause-effect. This theory implores that each and every action, word, and/or thought along with its intention, would act like sowing a seed. This seed would definitely sprout at a later stage and would eventually bear a fruit that would be required reaping. This can be simplified by saying that every human action would result in a real life situation that would necessarily be required to experience. The pain or pleasantness inflicted by the situation would be directly proportional to one’s actions in the past.
