Introduction to Tarot Reading
Tarot Reading can greatly help people whose lives seem to have touched rock
bottom. There are times one faces obstruction in different walks of life like
education, love, career, profession, and business etc. Everything seems to go
wrong. It is then the time to turn to Tarot.
The Tarot refers to a deck of cards that are commonly used for divination or for
'fortune telling.' This deck comprises 4 numbered suits similar to regular decks
of playing cards. It further includes 22 picture cards that are numbered from
zero to twenty-one or one to twenty-two.
The origin of these cards is disputed till date. Experts believe that the cards
appeared almost at the same time as the regular 52-card deck. Yet which one
originated first remains a debatable topic. The deck of cards used in Tarot
Reading, contains 14 cards in every suit whereas the playing cards’ deck
contains 13 cards. The reading cards coined as 'court cards' comprise a page
along with a king, a queen, and a Knight or Knave.
The pictured deck of cards containing twenty-two cards is popularly referred to
as the Major Arcana. The suited cards, on the other hand, are referred to as the
Minor Arcana. Tarot Reading cards initially were the permanent trump cards. This
further implies that in a game of trick-taking, a picture card generally would
take the trick over the suit-card. These picture cards exemplify universal story
themes. This can be better understood by an example. The picture The pictured

themes. This can be better understood by an example. The picture card termed as
the Fool connotes a young man who is seen setting off for a journey. He would
always be carrying a pack hanged over his shoulder. The card depicts the Fool
not watching where he is going. He seems to walk off the circumference of a
cliff. A small puppy however is always shown yapping at the heels of the Fool in
warning.
Some other Tarot Reading cards are known to portray concepts rather than
persons. The wheel of fortune connotes karma or fate whereas; justice is denoted
by figure of Judgment in all forms.
The suits however seem to have unswerving analogies to playing cards. Swords in
cosmic cards are spades, cups connote hearts, pentacles also known as discs or
coins denote diamonds. Staves or wands stand for clubs.
Using cards as a fortune telling tool dates back to the onset of the nineteenth
century Thus it called be considered a recent trend.
With the passage of time, the decks seemed to have undergone considerable
improvisation. The decks downplaying Christian symbolism are gaining more
popularity these days. Feminism has also crept in suites of the decks thereby
downsizing male dominance in traditional decks. Another upcoming trend in the
cards is that the suit system is shunned altogether by them. They are instead
structured around different themes like animals in Native Americans and the
like.
Similar to the themes, the usage of the card is also varied. The most prominent
use of these cards of course remains to be in a conventional fortune telling
layout. These cards however can even be used more often than not like tools for
intuition building, affirmation, and self –discovery. The cards used for Tarot
Reading also serve as inspiration cards for some.
