History of Western Astrology
Every average person in the West knows the placement of his/her Sun Sign
nowadays. Many more would not even start their day without reading their daily
Astrology reports. Although some may just simply go through it for momentary
entertainment, there are some who really hope to find their soul mate every
single day as their Monthly horoscope brags of it.
Astrology Reports thus have traveled a long way since they were considered to be
the copyrights of the rich only. Right from the very onset of humanity till
date, people all over the world have been seeking heavenly or planetary
guidance. The west was also no exception to the rule. And this seeking of
guidance was the advent of Western Astrology.
The roots of Western Astrology
The form of astrology that is followed by most Western astrologers these days
dates back to 2300 BC. Popularly referred to as Western Tropical astrology, it
came into existence in the ancient Mesopotamia where it remained in a dormant
form until 600 BC when it entered ancient Greece. Its entry to Greece proved to
be very beneficial for the country as the latter witnessed extra-ordinary
advancements in its culture.
After Alexander’s conquest of the world in 323-31 BC, study and acceptance of
this field reached and remained at its peak.
These 300 years may be considered as the historic years of Astrology. It was
during then that individualistic aspects of the field came into being such as
horoscopic astrology or the zodiacal one on the basis of which Astrology reports
or Monthly Horoscopes are made these days.
The quiet middle ages
After a celebrated success for some centuries post this, Western astrology went
quiet, although not dying out completely. This took place in the Middle period
of history. This age silently observed the predominance of the Church and stood
as mute evidence to several humanities wearing out. The practitioners of Western
astrology naturally kept a low profile and Astrology reports became extinct.
Renaissance revived the dying practice
It was at the onset of European Renaissance that astrology observed a very
welcome reemergence. With the revolution serving as the rejuvenating buffer for
a wide range of philosophies, astrology too regained its earlier prominence. Its
refurbished form served as a powerful tool against the vacillating church.
This rationalistic era of renaissance paved the way for scientific revolution
and scholastics finally stopped considering Earth to be the center of universe.
This theory was the greatest paradigm shift for the scholastics as it did cause
an ideological earthquake. The biggest benefit was that astrology and astronomy
were split as two individual principles.
Astronomy got blessed by Enlightenment and started blossoming under watchful
eyes whereas mystic astrology was cast aside. This gain was the period of doom
for the then disdainful Western astrology. It thence disappeared into darkness.
Modern revival
It was only very recently at the very onset of the 20th century that western
astrology revived once again. This refurbishment was brought home more
consciously and in public favor.
This final revival can be undoubtedly owed to the unfathomable astrologers
namely Sepharial and Alan Leo. They can be rightly called the founders of
‘Astrological Lodge of the Theosophical Society in Great Britain’.
And, there was no looking back since then for this eternal subject. It was this
final revival that gave way to Sun Sign Astrology reports and Monthly Horoscope.
The daily and weekly prediction columns gained the present day popularity owing
to the contemporary astrologer Paul Clancy’s magazine "American Astrology". It
became a great success in 1934 and initiated a novel "epoch" in astrology.
This was the advent of a new age of astrological popularity with more and more
people turning to the readings of zodiac signs.
TheThe craze for Astrology Reports and predictions is growing at a lightning fast
speed not only in US but globally. May this zeal never wear out now and keep
increasing even further!
